GI-2026-9-reg1: Maintenance and Repair of Ontario Municipal Drains Regulations

This regulation applies exclusively to Ontario municipalities responsible for drain maintenance under the provincial Drainage Act — private businesses and small businesses are not affected. About 130 drain maintenance projects per year that previously required individual DFO approval will now proceed automatically, saving municipalities time and administrative effort. Drainage superintendents will still need to submit pre-project notifications at least 10 days before starting work and post-project notifications within 60 days of completion, but this mirrors existing practice with no additional burden expected. DFO is also upgrading its online portal to make the notification process easier, so municipalities should actually see a modest reduction in paperwork compared to the old class authorization process.
