GI-2025-27-reg1: Order Declaring that the Regulations Respecting Reduction in the Release of Methane and Certain Volatile Organic Compounds (Upstream Oil and Gas Sector) Do Not Apply in Alberta, 2025

Alberta upstream oil and gas companies — including producers, pipeline operators, and facilities managing compressors, pneumatic controllers, glycol dehydrators, and venting sources — benefit directly by only having to comply with one set of rules (Alberta's) instead of both federal and provincial methane regulations. This reduces paperwork, reporting, and compliance costs since the previous overlap meant tracking two separate regulatory frameworks. The federal government itself saves an estimated $1.64 million over five years in enforcement and administration costs. Facilities on Indigenous reserve lands in Alberta are also affected and are expected to see similar compliance cost savings.
