GI-2024-50-reg3: Export Applications (Licences and Permits) Regulations

Energy companies in the oil, gas, and electricity sectors that export to the United States or other markets will need to update how they prepare export licence and permit applications. The good news is that the paperwork is getting simpler — you no longer need to submit information about transportation arrangements, export markets, or contractual agreements that aren't relevant to whether your export exceeds Canada's surplus. The CER estimates businesses will save about $1.14 million in administrative costs over 10 years (roughly $162,000 per year), since applications will take less time to complete and require fewer supporting studies. Currently, it's primarily large companies applying for export authorizations, with no small businesses actively doing so, though the simplified rules would benefit any small business that enters the market in the future.
