If you manufacture, import, or sell any of the covered products in Canada — from pool pumps and showerheads to commercial HVAC equipment and light bulbs — you will need to ensure your products meet new or updated energy efficiency and testing standards, obtain third-party verification from an accredited certification body, and file updated energy efficiency and import reports. About 3,369 businesses are affected in total, including 1,218 small businesses, with average annualized administrative costs of roughly $19 per business ($840 per small business) and total industry compliance costs averaging about $1.9 million per year. The biggest cost hit falls on electric water heater supply chains, where incremental technology upgrades are estimated at over $3.3 billion cumulatively through 2050, though consumers are projected to recoup far more in energy savings. Products mostly manufactured outside Canada by multinationals face the largest adjustment, but Canadian importers and distributors across the HVAC, plumbing, lighting, and industrial equipment sectors will all need to review their product lines and certification status before the applicable manufacture dates.
