Bill 49: Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act

Landlords who rent out residential properties in the Northwest Territories are most directly affected — whether they own a single rental unit or manage a larger residential complex. Day-to-day property management could now involve cooperating with the Director of Community Operations if illegal activity is reported on their premises, and they may be called into proceedings before a rental officer when community safety orders are sought or contested. Landlords also gain new tools, as they can request assistance from the Director when applying to evict tenants for illegal activities, and can apply for eviction orders based on community safety orders that terminate a tenancy. Businesses that carry on operations involving records about property ownership or occupancy (such as property management firms) may receive requests to hand over copies of business records to the Director.
