Bill 2: Missing Persons Act

Any business or organization in the Northwest Territories that holds records about individuals — such as telecom providers, banks, hotels, employers, schools, hospitals, retailers with CCTV, or ride/accommodation services — could receive either a formal court order or an urgent written demand from the RCMP requiring them to produce copies of those records quickly. A small hotel operator, for example, might be asked to hand over check-in records or security camera footage; a wireless carrier or internet provider might be asked for device location signals or browsing history; a bank or credit union might need to disclose recent transaction data. The obligation applies regardless of business size, from a solo operator running a small shop to a large employer or healthcare provider, and non-compliance can result in fines up to $25,000 for corporations.
