AB-016: Bill 16: Traveller Protection and Destination Development Act

This bill affects anyone in Alberta who runs a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, short-term rental, hostel, or private campground, as well as operators of tourism attractions and experiences. If you charge a destination marketing fee on top of your room or experience rate — whether you're a solo Airbnb-style host or a large hotel group — you'll need to ensure that fee is collected and remitted through a designated trustee, and that you're only charging it in areas where a recognized destination marketing organization exists. Online platforms that facilitate bookings are also captured, though the fee remittance responsibility stays with the operator. A key day-to-day change is the new price transparency rule: you must show all mandatory fees upfront at the time of booking, and explain what they're for if a customer asks — no more surprise charges at checkout.
