Businesses most likely to feel the effects are those operating near Nova Scotia's lakes — think waterfront developers, cottage or resort operators, agricultural operations that use fertilizers near water, and municipalities managing water and wastewater systems. If the Commission recommends tighter restrictions on nutrients and contaminants, farmers and landscaping businesses that apply fertilizers close to lakeshores could face new limits on what products they use and when. Developers planning lakeside properties may see additional environmental review requirements come out of the Commission's recommendations. The bill is still at an early advisory stage, so there are no hard compliance obligations yet, but businesses in these sectors should watch for the recommendations that could eventually translate into enforceable rules.
