Bill 201: The Employment Standards Code Amendment Act (Right to Religious Observance)

This bill affects virtually every employer in Manitoba, but hits hardest for retail businesses, restaurants, and other operations that run on weekends or statutory holidays. If you run a store, shop, or any customer-facing business, you'll now need to manage requests from employees who want to swap Good Friday or Christmas Day for a different religious holiday — and you have to respond in writing within seven days. If your business stays open on those holidays, you still pay your regular holiday wage rules, just on a different day. You'll also need to make room during the workday for employees to observe religious practices like prayer, and you can't refuse someone for wearing religious clothing unless it creates a genuine safety issue.
