Bill C-27: Final Self-Government Agreement for the Tlegohli Got’ine Act

Most Canadian businesses will not be directly affected by this legislation. However, businesses operating in the Northwest Territories — particularly those in resource extraction, land use, construction, or environmental services — that work on or near Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got'įnę Settlement Lands will face new regulatory requirements. These operators, whether small contractors or larger resource companies, must now obtain permits or authorizations under Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got'įnę law before using those lands, even if federal or territorial regulations would not otherwise require one. Companies in the Sahtu region that deal with the Sahtu Land and Water Board should also be aware that the Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got'įnę Government now has authority to issue binding policy directions on land and water use affecting Settlement Lands. Additionally, the Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got'įnę Government gains authority to levy a First Nations GST and real property taxes on lands within Tłegǫ́hłı̨, which could affect businesses operating or holding property in that area.
