This primarily affects logging contractors and forestry operators in British Columbia who work with BC Timber Sales. If you're a contract logger — whether a solo operator with a feller buncher or a small-to-mid-sized crew doing harvesting, road building, and hauling — you'll now be operating under a new 'contract logging authorization' instead of (or alongside) traditional timber sale licences. This means BCTS can hire you directly to harvest Crown timber under contract, but you won't hold any rights to the timber itself. Your licence terms can now require compliance with external certification standards (such as FSC or CSA sustainable forestry programs), and those conditions can be more stringent than baseline provincial forestry laws, increasing your day-to-day operational and environmental compliance obligations.
