AB-209: Bill 209: Consumer Protection (Affordability Measures) Amendment Act, 2026

This bill touches several different types of Alberta businesses. Retailers and online sellers — whether running an e-commerce store or a physical shop — must make sure the price a customer sees in any ad or listing is the price they actually pay, aside from applicable taxes and real delivery costs. Businesses that sell ongoing subscriptions or memberships online (think streaming services, software subscriptions, gym memberships sold digitally) will need to build a clear, easy-to-use cancellation button directly into their website. Operators of privately owned ATMs in locations like convenience stores, bars, or malls will need to cap their surcharge fees, which directly affects their revenue model. Secondary ticket resellers and platforms — anyone in the business of reselling event tickets — can no longer charge a separate fee just to transfer a ticket to the buyer.
