AB-206: Bill 206: Accessible Alberta Act

Any business in Alberta that employs people, offers accommodation, owns or operates buildings or facilities, provides public transportation, or sells goods and services to the public could be subject to accessibility standards once they are established. This covers a wide range of operators — from a small retail shop owner in Calgary managing a storefront, to a mid-size construction firm building residential units, to a larger employer running HR and hiring processes — all of whom may need to change how they set up their physical spaces, communicate with customers, or structure their workplaces. The standards themselves have not yet been finalized; they will be developed over time through a regulated process and each standard will specify who must comply and by when. Businesses will want to track which standards get established and what timelines are set, as compliance requirements will vary by industry and activity.
