This bill affects a broad range of Alberta businesses that hold water licences or divert water — including farmers and ranchers, oil and gas operators, industrial facilities, municipal water utilities, and construction companies. If you run an operation that diverts water from a river, stream, or groundwater source under a licence, you'll now need to submit copies of any agreements or contracts tied to water assignments or transfers before you can divert water under them. Businesses exploring water reuse — such as those treating and resupplying process water — will have new options under a formal 'water for reuse' framework. Larger operations with multiple points of diversion or complex licence arrangements will feel the most impact, particularly around new disclosure and monitoring rules, but even smaller agricultural users on Crown land may be affected by changes to registration eligibility.
